Pet entry requirements: Dog → China

These are the requirements for entering China with a dog, based on a departure from Germany/the EU. Requirements can change — always confirm with the relevant authority before you travel.

🔴 Required

📝

Import permit Required

No advance permit, but Customs declaration on entry is mandatory; max. 1 animal (dog OR cat) per person

🔖

Microchip Required

ISO-compatible 15-digit microchip, BEFORE the rabies vaccination

💉

Rabies vaccination Required

Yes – valid rabies vaccination with official record (2 doses usual for exemption); animal over 3 months

🧪

Rabies titer test Required

Yes – Germany is NOT a "specified region" → titer ≥0.5 IU/ml from a GACC lab is MANDATORY (for quarantine exemption). Confirm with GACC

📄

Health certificate Required

Government veterinary health/quarantine certificate from the exporting country (~14 days), with original vaccine and titer reports

🏥

Quarantine Required

30-day quarantine in a Customs facility — WAIVED with chip + vaccination + titer ≥0.5 IU/ml + passing inspection

🔗

Muzzle / leash Required

Municipal: leash obligation in Beijing/Shanghai (sometimes time windows), muzzle for larger dogs — verify locally

🟡 Recommended

🔬

Other tests Not required

No further mandatory laboratory tests

⚠️ Notes & grey zone

⚠️

Grey zone

Myth "EU = titer-exempt" — Germany needs the titer; any gap = 30-day quarantine; 1-pet limit; city breed/size bans can make the pet illegal at the residence

ℹ️

Notes

1 animal/person; Customs declaration mandatory; pets needing quarantine only via ports with a facility (PEK/PVG etc.); port list changes — check before booking

Authority: GACC (Zollverwaltung der VR China) / Bekanntmachung [2019] Nr. 5
