Pet entry requirements: Cat → Iceland

These are the requirements for entering Iceland with a cat, based on a departure from Germany/the EU. Requirements can change — always confirm with the relevant authority before you travel.

🔴 Required

📝

Import permit Required

Import permit from MAST required before import (application 2.14 for cats from an approved country; fee; permit valid one year).

🔖

Microchip Required

ISO-compliant microchip; number verified by the vet at every examination, test or treatment for import.

💉

Rabies vaccination Required

Valid rabies vaccination maintained per manufacturer instructions; cats from category 1 countries (Germany listed).

🧪

Rabies titer test Required

Rabies antibody titre test at an EU-approved laboratory, blood sample at the earliest 30 days after vaccination (day of vaccination = day 0), result at least 0.5 IU/ml; valid as long as the vaccination is kept up to date. Category 1: no further waiting period after the test.

🔬

Other tests Required

Blood tests for FeLV and FIV, both negative, sample within 30 days before import, lab report in English. Also vaccination against feline panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis, calicivirus (last vaccination at least 14 days before import). No leptospirosis/brucellosis/A. vasorum tests for cats in the C1 guidance.

🪱

Parasite treatment Required

Two treatments against internal and external parasites: 21-28 days and 5-10 days before import; products registered for roundworm and tapeworm and for lice, fleas and ticks.

📄

Health certificate Required

Only form C1 (category 1 countries), issued by an authorised vet in the country of export; health examination and issue 5-10 days before import; certificate with lab reports to MAST by e-mail at the latest 5 days before import. Numeric field left empty (no independent second source).

🏛️

Official endorsement of the health certificate Required

The certificate is pre-approved and signed by MAST (part 10).

🏥

Quarantine Required

Minimum 14 days quarantine at one of two approved stations (Hafnir/Reykjanesbær or Mósel/Hella). Numeric field left empty (regulation and MAST guidance are not independent sources).

⚠️ Notes & grey zone

⚠️

Grey zone

The FAQ names a leptospirosis vaccination for "every dog/cat"; the cat guidance C1, certificate C1 and the regulation (cat list) do not list it for cats, MAST page: "Leptospirosis (dogs only)". Not taken over as a cat requirement. Clarify the contradiction with MAST.

ℹ️

Notes

Germany is a category 1 (rabies-free) country for cats. The cat must have lived in a category 1 country since birth or at least 6 months. Not permitted: pregnant and lactating queens, cats injured or operated on just before import (only with MAST special permission). Entry only via Keflavík, arrival 06:00-17:00 on fixed quarantine admission days, air transport only, cabin/checked baggage/cargo possible. No age ban per FAQ, but all requirements must be met.
