Pet entry requirements: Dog → Iceland

These are the requirements for entering Iceland with a dog, based on a departure from Germany/the EU. Requirements can change — always confirm with the relevant authority before you travel.

🔴 Required

📝

Import permit Required

An import permit from the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority (MAST) is mandatory before arrival (application with breed, country of export, microchip number, importer; fee; permit valid one year). Importation without a permit is prohibited.

🔖

Microchip Required

ISO-compliant microchip mandatory, implanted before any treatment or sampling for import begins; the vet verifies the chip number at every examination/sample/treatment and it is checked on arrival.

💉

Rabies vaccination Required

Valid rabies vaccination (basic immunisation, maintained per manufacturer) for dogs from rabies-free countries (Category 1, Germany listed). The vaccination must be valid when the titer sample is taken. The D1 overview table states 'Vaccination at least 45-60 days prior to importation' (that source only; number not captured as a field).

🧪

Rabies titer test Required

Rabies antibody titer test mandatory: sample at the earliest 30 days after vaccination (vaccination day = day 0), in an EU-approved laboratory, result at least 0.5 IU/ml. Category 1 (Germany): no additional waiting period after the test. The titer stays valid as long as the vaccination is kept up to date.

🔬

Other tests Required

Required: Brucella canis blood test (negative, sampled within 30 days before arrival; declaration that the dog has not mated in the last 2 months); Leishmania test for intact dogs only (within 30 days, negative; a positive result only allows import after neutering); Angiostrongylus vasorum: either a negative test (within 30 days) OR preventive treatment 5-10 days before arrival (imidacloprid+moxidectin). Additionally valid vaccinations against leptospirosis, distemper, parvovirus, infectious hepatitis and parainfluenza, last dose at least 14 days before arrival. Lab reports in English with chip number and sampling date.

🪱

Parasite treatment Required

Two treatments against internal (roundworm/tapeworm) and external parasites (lice, fleas, ticks): first 21-28 days, second 5-10 days before arrival (at least 14 days apart). Products must cover the respective parasites; tapeworm treatment is mandatory (no EU-style Echinococcus-only window).

📄

Health certificate Required

Original MAST form 'Health and Origin Certificate D1' (dogs from Category 1) completed by an authorised vet in the country of export, all fields filled in; valid 10 days from issue; examination and issuance 5-10 days before arrival; scanned with lab reports to petimport@mast.is for approval no later than 5 days before arrival. Only form D1 is valid; the EU pet passport is not mentioned in the sources.

🏥

Quarantine Required

Mandatory quarantine of at least 14 days at one of two approved stations (Reykjanesbaer, Mosel/Hella); the importer must book a place in advance (admission roughly every 3 weeks). No home quarantine (certified assistance dogs only, on application). Applies to short visits/holidays too. MAST may extend it on suspicion of disease, at the importer's cost.

🐾

Breed restrictions Prohibited

Import ban for Pit Bull Terrier/American Staffordshire Terrier/Staffordshire Bull Terrier/American Bulldog, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, Dogo Argentino, Cane Corso, Presa Canario, Boerboel and their crosses up to the 5th generation; also wolf hybrids (at least 10 generations) and dogs of comparable origin/physique/temperament by reasoned MAST decision. MAST may require DNA test/pedigree.

⚠️ Notes & grey zone

⚠️

Grey zone

Breed list: the D1 PDF (dated 01.07.2025) names only 'Pit Bull Terrier/Staffordshire Bull Terrier' without AmStaff/American Bulldog; the MAST web page (updated 03.09.2026) and the regulation (amended 09.12.2025) give the longer list, which is applied here. Open category 'Other dog breeds ... considered to be a risk' at MAST's assessment. The Icelandic regulation also allows a temperament assessment (Art. 13). Numeric deadlines are supported by one norm only and are therefore not captured as numeric fields.

ℹ️

Notes

Origin branch: Germany is in Category 1 (rabies-free) of approved exporting countries; the animal must have lived since birth or at least 6 months in an approved country (same category). Entry only via Keflavik airport (no ferry), only 06:00-17:00 on the quarantine station's fixed admission days. Not importable: pregnant/lactating bitches, recently injured/operated animals without special permission. Cats: the same regulation 200/2020 treats dogs and cats together (permit, 14-day quarantine, rabies titer, parasite treatment, certificate) but with its own guidance/certificate (C1) and different vaccinations/tests (panleukopenia, cat flu; FeLV/FIV test) and no breed list; this file covers dogs only, cats are not separately evidenced.
