Pet entry requirements: Cat → Faroe Islands
These are the requirements for entering Faroe Islands with a cat, based on a departure from Germany/the EU. Requirements can change — always confirm with the relevant authority before you travel.
🔴 Required
Import permit Required
Required: import permit from the FFVA; application at least 6 business days before departure from the country of dispatch, with processing fee (minimum DKK 750) and payment receipt; health certificate to hfs@hfs.fo 2 business days before departure. Apply only once the cat is chipped, vaccinated and the rabies titre result is satisfactory. Only people with permanent residence in the Faroe Islands, or people moving there, may import cats; owners without permanent residence cannot bring cats when travelling. Without a permit the carrier refuses boarding. Transit through the Faroe Islands to other countries is prohibited.
Microchip Required
Required: microchip to ISO standard 11784; the ID number must be recorded in all required documentation.
Rabies vaccination Required
Required: rabies vaccination at least 4 weeks before arrival in the Faroe Islands, no older than the producer recommends; if revaccinated on time the cat can be imported immediately afterwards. Also required: vaccination against feline panleukopenia, feline viral rhinotracheitis, feline calicivirus and feline leukaemia virus.
Rabies titer test Required
Required: rabies titre test (blood sample at least 4 weeks after rabies vaccination), EU-approved laboratory, result at least 0.5 IU/ml. Import at the earliest 12 weeks after the blood sample was taken.
Parasite treatment Required
Required: treatment against endo- and ectoparasites: roundworm, tapeworm (including Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis), scabies, lice, fleas and Ixodes ricinus. Treatments must not be older than the producer recommends on arrival; confirmed in the health certificate.
Health certificate Required
Required: veterinary health certificate (cat healthy, all required parasite treatments given), not older than 2 days at departure and received by the FFVA (hfs@hfs.fo) 2 business days before departure. Departures from the country of dispatch are therefore only possible Wednesday to Saturday.
Breed restrictions Prohibited
Prohibited: importing hybrid breeds (e.g. Bengal cats), regardless of the genetic percentage. The leaflet names no other breeds.
⚠️ Notes & grey zone
Grey zone
Leaflet applies to cats from group B (Germany named). If the cat stayed outside groups A/B in the past 6 months, non-listed-country conditions apply (not captured). No routine quarantine is named; if conditions are not met the FFVA may order quarantine, return or euthanasia. Legal basis Kunngerð 82/2021 was not checked in full text.
Notes
If the owner cannot accompany the cat, a courier must accompany it until handover and verify the permit before boarding. Fee minimum DKK 750 (more if processing exceeds 1.5 hours). Customs checks the permit on arrival; the FFVA may carry out ID and physical inspections. The owner bears all costs. Legal basis: Kunngerð no. 82 of 18 May 2021.
