Pet entry requirements: Dog → Faroe Islands
These are the requirements for entering Faroe Islands with a dog, based on a departure from Germany/the EU. Requirements can change — always confirm with the relevant authority before you travel.
🔴 Required
Import permit Required
Every dog needs an import permit from the Faroese Food and Veterinary Authority (Heilsufrøðiliga Starvsstovan, FFVA). Apply at least 6 business days before departure from the country of dispatch, pay the processing fee (minimum DKK 750) in advance; FFVA application form required (a copy of the pet passport is not sufficient). The permit must accompany the dog on arrival; the carrier refuses boarding without it.
Microchip Required
Microchip (ISO standard 11784) required; the ID number must be stated in all required documents.
Rabies vaccination Required
Rabies vaccination required at least 4 weeks before arrival in the Faroe Islands; vaccination must not be older than recommended by the producer. Also distemper, infectious canine hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza, leptospirosis. Puppies: vaccinated at 12 weeks at the earliest, then 4 weeks wait. With timely revaccination the dog can be imported immediately.
Rabies titer test Required
Rabies antibody titre test: blood sample at least 4 weeks after rabies vaccination, EU-approved laboratory, result at least 0.5 IU/ml; entry at the earliest 12 weeks after the blood sample (number only in text, not captured as a deadline field as there is only one source).
Parasite treatment Required
Treatment against roundworm, French heartworm, tapeworm (including Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis), scabies, lice, fleas and Ixodes ricinus; treatment not older than recommended by the producer on arrival.
Health certificate Required
Veterinary health certificate (confirming health and all required parasite treatments), not older than 2 days at departure; to be sent to the FFVA (hfs@hfs.fo) 2 business days before departure. Departure only Wednesday to Saturday (numbers only in text).
Breed restrictions Prohibited
Import of dog breeds that pose a threat to people and animals is prohibited (list on hfs.fo, not retrieved here), as is import of hybrids (e.g. wolfdogs) regardless of genetic percentage.
⚠️ Notes & grey zone
Notes
Source: FFVA leaflet for import from group B (Germany named explicitly; group A = DK, FI, IE, IS, NO, UK, SE has its own leaflet without titre test). Import only by persons with permanent residence in the Faroe Islands or persons moving there; owners without permanent residence cannot bring dogs on holiday. Transit with a dog through the Faroe Islands is prohibited. Dogs that were outside group A/B in the last 6 months fall under the conditions for non-listed countries. On non-compliance: examination/vaccination/treatment, quarantine under FFVA supervision, return or euthanasia (quarantine as a sanction; no routine quarantine evidenced for compliant dogs). Not identical for cats: separate leaflet (cats: permit, chip, rabies vaccination, titre also; hybrid ban e.g. Bengal) - cat run separate.
